Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, on Sunday, launched the e-rickshaw service in the city. These battery-operated rickshaws require eight to nine hours of charging to run for around 80-90 kilometres per hour. These rickshaws are zero emission means of transport for the passengers. The electricity during per charge would cost not more than Rs 30 for domestic customers while it will cost Rs 50 for commercial users. Therefore, the running cost comes down drastically to just 25 paise a kilometre. The price of an e-rickshaw would cost around Rs 1, 05, 000 to 1,10,000. At present, more than 10, 000 auto rickshaws are plying in the city. With the introduction of e-rickshaws, over 50, 000 youths of the State are expected to get employment opportunities, sources said.
