Remember Dana Majhi? May be not by his name, but his image will be familiar. Because he was one of the characters in an image that shook the consciousness of India last year.Majhi was the unfortunate man who was forced to carry his dead wife for nearly 12 km as he had no money for a hearse van and the district hospital authorities allegedly refused to arrange one.
A year on, a lot has changed for Majhi, thanks to a number of generous people. After his image went viral, a number of people, both Indians and foreigners came to help Majhi.
Thanks to the generous donations Majhi now has Rs 37 lakh in his accounts and his three daughters including the eldest, Chandini, who was with him when he had to carry his wife, Amanga Dei’s corpse on his shoulder exactly a year ago, now study at a tribal school in Bhubaneswar. Read more
