Airtel now gives users ‘free’ 4G data for 12 months

Airtel on Tuesday announced a special offer under which it will offer free data for 12 months worth to customers who switch to Airtel 4G. The 12-month offer is available people who are not currently using Airtel 4G. Hence, once they switch to Airtel’s 4G services, they will get this offer. The existing Airtel consumers too can avail this offer if they switch to a new 4G handset. This offer will be available consumers starting January 4, 2017 and will close on February 28, 2017.

The offer is clearly aimed at ensuring that people do not join the Reliance Jio 4G, which is currently offering free services as part of Happy New Year offer until March 31.

In the Airtel’s offer, customers will get free 3GB data every month till December 31, 2017 with select prepaid and postpaid packs under this offer. So in a way the data is not completely free. Instead, a portion of data, or rather the major portion of data, will be offered for free.

Airtel said that the prepaid users will be able to avail the offer by paying Rs 345 while postpaid subscribers will get it with the MyPlan Infinity Plans. Here is what the company provides:

For prepaid users

Users with any 4G supporting handset who are not on the Airtel network or upgrading to a new 4G device, can enjoy 3GB free data, in addition to the regular pack benefits with Airtel’s Rs 345 prepaid recharge. The pack will offer free calls — Local and STD — to any network in Indian addition to 4GB data (1GB regular pack benefit + 3GB free data).

The first time free 3GB data benefit can be availed through MyAirtel app and data benefits on subsequent recharges will be instant. The pack comes with 28 days validity and can be availed for a maximum of 13 recharges till December 31, 2017.

For postpaid users

Customers with any 4G mobile handset who are not on the Airtel network or upgrading to a new 4G device, will get 3GB free data per month, with all MyPlan Infinity plans. This is in addition to regular plan benefits which includes unlimited free voice calling — Local/STD/Roaming, generous bundles of data, free SMS and free subscription to Wynk Music and Wynk Movies. Postpaid customers can claim the free data through MyAirtel App.

For example, Rs 549 Infinity plan will now offer unlimited free calling plus 6GB data (3GB regular data + 3GB free data) per month along with other pack benefits to customers under this offer. The Rs 799 Infinity plan will offer unlimited free calling plus 8 GB data (5 GB regular data + 3GB free data) per month along with other pack benefits to customers under this offer. Airtel recently also launched two new bundled packs for its prepaid customers. Under the new offer users get with free voice calling and added data benefits. The first pack costs Rs 145 and offers 300 MB data with 4G supporting smartphones in addition to free  Airtel-to-Airtel calls, local and STD. The pack also offers 50 MB data (in addition to free Airtel-to-Airtel calls across India) with non-4G handsets.

The second pack is priced at Rs 345. It offers 1 GB data with 4G supporting smartphones. Along with this, user also gets fee calls – Local and STD – over any network in India. The pack will also offer 50 MB data (in addition to free calls to any network across India) to non-4G handsets users. Both the packs come with validity of 28 days and is available to customers across India.

Commenting on the new offers, Ajai Puri, director of market operations at Bharti Airtel, said, “We are inviting customers to experience 4G through the year on India’s fastest network. We are seeing increasing penetration of 4G handsets across the country and believe that this attractive offer will provide an opportunity to more and more customers to enjoy high speed broadband on their devices with Airtel.”

As Jio ramps up its operations ahead of its commercial launch in couple of months, companies like Airtel, Vodafone and Idea are coming out with new and more attractive plans for their consumers. While most of these plans aren’t particularly good, some like Airtel’s Infinity Plans are quite fantastic.
