BHUBANESWAR: In an Odisha first, two voluntary organizations on Sunday installed a community refrigerator in front of a restaurant at Sainik School square here to feed hungry people of the city. People, who have surplus food, can donate to the fridge instead of throwing it.
The initiative is jointly taken by two organizations- Bhubaneswar Knights Round Table (BKRT) and Bhubaneswar Queens Ladies Circle (BQLC). They named the community fridge initiative as ‘Annapurna’.
The motive of the initiative is to eliminate food wastage and feed the hungry people. “We don’t want anyone to sleep hungry in pain or worry about food,” said Anuradha Vishesh Agrawal, chairperson of BQLC.
She said residents, who stay nearby, can always send their surplus food on occasions such as after holding a birthday party. Local restaurants can also donate unsold food instead throwing it, she added.
BKRT chairman Gaurav Chawla said they will maintain a record of regular contributors, so that they can call and request the donors for additional food during shortage. “People can also donate money to help partner members to keep food in the fridge,” he added.
